Things people always ask me

Why I moved to Iceland?

When we met in March of 2018 I was about to end my second year of gymnasium(in Estonia gymnasium is 3 years). I finished gymnasium, but I wasn’t fully sure what I wanted to learn in University(still don’t). We had been in a long distance relationship for 1,5 years by then and I was sick of only seeing my Icelandic boyfriend in video calls with horrible connection or a few times a year. So I decided why not move to Reykjavik, Iceland.

How did me and my boyfriend meet?

We both took part in a Nordplus project with our schools. In that particular project there were students from Estonia, Iceland, Denmark, Finland and Latvia. We met in Kuressaare(my hometown) in February of 2018. At first there wasn’t this big connection or chemistry between us but we got along very well. A mutual friend of ours told me that Björgvin was into me. So on the last night of his stay, we ended up talking all night and becoming very close. At around 4 o’clock I finally had to go home because h ehad to take the early bus to Tallinn the next morning. Neither of us thought anything would come of it. But here we are 2 and a half years later.

What I am doing now?

Right now(August 2020) I will start a year long course to learn Icelandic in The University of Iceland. I have school three times a week and we focus on speaking the most.

Will I go to University next school year in Iceland or Estonia?

My honest answer is I don’t know. Before I was going one month at a time. Now I just know that the next year of my life i will spend in Iceland, but after that I will have to see which university I am drawn to more.

What do I want to study in University?

I am interested in anything to do with education and environmentalism. Right now in the University of Iceland I like International Studies in Education(taught in English). In Tallinn University i am into Andragogy, Environmental Management and Youth Work(All taught in Estonian).

How much Icelandic do I speak?

I can do a little bit of small talk and can handle going to stores(but I do tend to speak English if I need help). I do really want to be able to speak Icelandic fluently and because I realised that on my own and under pressure I wasn’t learning. So now, on my own terms and with excitement, i am starting my Icelandic studies.

Say something in Icelandic

Ég heiti Laura og ég tala eistnesku, ensku, smá rússnesku og pinulitið þýsku og íslensku. *

Hvað þýðir það?**(a nice tongue twister for someone that does not have the ’th’ sound in their native language)

*(translation) I am called/My name is Laura and I speak Estonian, English, a bit of Russian and a tiny bit of German and Icelandic.

**What does it mean?
