How I moved with just one suitcase

I haven't posted in a while, but new year, new posts. So like I have mentioned before, I moved to Iceland with a 23 kg check-in suitcase and a 8 kg carry-on. I was able to do that due to not owning that many clothes.

I own:

Things I have gotten whilst living in Iceland are in brackets.

  • 16 tops

  • 3 hoodies

  • 1 sweater

  • 1 sweaterdress

  • 3 pairs of jeans-green, red and orange

  • 3 pairs of fancy pants-gray, black, navy

  • 2 skirts- gray and light purple

  • 1 gray dress (+1 floral dress)

  • 3 pairs of shorts

  • 1 pair of sweatpants (+1 pair of sports leggings)

  • 2 jackets- leather and denim

  • 1 raincoat

  • 2 winter coat

  • 1 pair of pyjama pants

  • 1 pyjama set (+1 more)

  • (1 pair of winter boots)

  • 1 pair of boots

  • 1 pair of heels

  • 1 pair of low fancy shoes

  • 1 pair of sneakers

When I moved my wardrobe consisted of 36 everyday clothing items, three coats, 5 pairs of shoes, as well as pyjamas, underwear, socks and tights. I would only like to add a nice warm sweater.

Owning fewer clothes means that I know exactly what I own and I only wear clothes that make me feels good. I don't have the need to buy and if I do then I think it through before. And in the future I want to not just buy more clothes, but swap them. Even though I don't own that many clothes, it is not a capsule wardrobe, but this is my future plan.

From the added clothes, the dress is bought second-hand for date nights, leggings were needed as and underlayer and for yoga and winter boots were of course needed to get through this winter. Out of the clothes that I have gotten the new pyjama was the least needed, but gets a good amount of use out of it.

Whilst travelling by plane it is both more environmentally friendly and comfortable to travel with the least amount of suitcases. Also it is better in the bigger picture. You can also see what type of ecological footprint your shopping habits are creating (link here). A short quiz will show you how big your fashion footprint is compared to the average person and what flight is equivalent to it.

It is always smarter to buy second-hand and fast fashion should be the last possible option. Use the app or web page Good On You to make better choices and to look the if your chosen company is environmentally good.
